Walt Aldred was a graduate of Durham University in 1980 when he joined  Schlumberger working offshore in the North Sea and West Africa as a mud logger, monitoring the realtime drilling operations and the evaluating the pore pressure and geology.  Since the early 80’s he worked on the development of realtime drilling monitoring and evaluation of new drilling systems, including the early development of geosteering. Walt has worked in the engineering development centre and marketing in Houston, and had a number of field assignments including 4 ½ years in Nigeria setting up and running the drilling engineering centre. 

Walt is currently the Research Director and Scientific Advisor for Drilling at Schlumberger Cambridge Research, working on novel drilling methods and automation of the drilling system, he is also a founding member of the SPE Drilling Systems Automation Technical Section (DSATS).
